Hammer Attack Trial: Wife claims it was self defense

Posted: Updated:

More dramatic testimony in the murder trial of Marissa Devault. She's charged with bludgeoning her husband to death with a claw hammer as he slept five years ago.

Court was dismissed Wednesday when Marissa Devault broke down in court. On Thursday the jury saw more interrogation video. A Gilbert Police detective did a five and a half hour interrogation the day of the murder.

In the interrogation Marissa Devault is wearing a hoodie, and at times is frequently in tears. She described what she claims was an abusive relationship with her husband Dale Harrell. The detective leads her up to the moment she ended her husband's life with a series of blows to the head with a hammer.

Detective: "So how many times do you think you hit him?"
Devault: "I do not know"
Devault: "I don't know, I was just really for every time he touched me and I wanted him to know what it felt like"

Marissa Devault claims she killed her husband in self-defense. Prosecutors say she did it to get his life insurance money.
