DECATUR, Ga. -

A judge has just handed down his sentence against a man who killed a grandmother and 3-year-old granddaughter while fleeing from police. Jeremiah Warthen took the stand in court, apologizing to the family of his two victims. He was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison with 20 to serve.

A lot of tears shed in the courtroom before that sentence was handed down. It's been almost a year, March 20, 2013, since 57-year-old Alicia Moxley and her 3-year-old granddaughter, Jordan Haynes, were killed after their SUV was struck. Jeremiah Warthen was behind the wheel.

Warthen had a long criminal history and had cocaine on him as well. He slammed on the gas instead of the brakes. None of this was supposed to happen. When it was all said and done, the grandmother, 3-year-old killed, and several other members of the family seriously injured in the crash, including a 17-year-old and two younger children.

"I want the family to know that I'm sorry for their loss. I'm very sorry. I'm going to keep them in my prayers. I pray that they will understand that this was not a deliberate thing. It is going to haunt me for the rest of my life. I just want them to know that I'm sorry," Warthen said in court Thursday before his sentencing.

The daughter of Alicia also took the stand saying her life and family's life will never be the same. She's heartbroken she will have children that will never know her mother.

Everyone expected him to accept this plea agreement. The only question was how long.
