Pot-luck protest; People fired up over state statute banning the events

Posted: Updated:

The tradition of pot-luck gatherings is forbidden at one retirement community in Apache Junction thanks to an obscure law.

There is an Arizona law that appears to prohibit pot-lucks unless they're held at the workplace.

At the Silverado Estates Retirement Park, residents say there is one person who wants to stir up problems; he calls the health department on them.

Since then they've had to do away with their pot-lucks.

"I mean pot lucks people all over the U.S. have pot lucks, churches have pot-lucks; everybody has pot-lucks," said Sue Ward.

But there are no pot-lucks for Residents of Silverado Estates retirement park.

"Honestly, it's disgusting, it's absolutely absurd and disgusting," said Lena, a resident at the park.

"this is the stupidest law I ever heard of," said Ward.

Their Lawmaker says she is looking into the statute that says food can be served at a non-commercial social event that takes place at the workplace.

"I went and joined them for a pot-luck last week and told them if there's something we can do at the state level absolutely we will do that," said Rep. Kelly Townsend.

Not everyone at Silverado is pro pot-luck.

One resident says the health rules are there for a reason, that he and other residents skip the pot lucks at the park.

"If it's just everybody bring stuff down I don't want to eat there because  because you don't know the content whose making it if it's healthy that's what I'm looking at," said Richard Schneider

"This law doesn't make any sense to me are you honestly saying these women who have been cooking for their families for the last 40 or 50 years are going to make something that's going to poison somebody when we have a pot-luck," said Ward.

The resident who called the health department has also gotten them banned from being able to hold bingo games at the recreation hall.
