Wedding planning: flowers, catering and... social media?

Wedding planning: flowers, catering and... social media?

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

To hashtag or not to hashtag? That's the question we posed to brides-to-be at the New York Weddings Event.

Lauren Kaminsky's wedding is still 9 months away but already she's decided on a hashtag for all wedding-related cell-phone pictures.

If you have no idea what we're talking about look no further than Instagram or Twitter and you'll find countless couples, say Amy and Mark or Julie and Matt, with digital scrapbooks of their weddings comprised of photos taken by their guests and tagged with their names.

"You get kind of an insider aspect to your wedding without actually having to be in every corner," Kaminsky says. "It's instant so the next day you can wake up and look at your hashtag."

Bride-to-be Tracy Mern says: "I think it's a good way to keep track of everyone's photos and what everyone's doing at the entire event."

Picking out a hashtag or setting up a website is becoming just as much a part of the planning as picking the dress and the cake, says wedding planner Angie Nevarez of Baton NYC.

"It's become very popular," she says. "I'm working with a couple now where we're putting a hashtag with their name on everything."

Incorporating social media into the wedding has become so popular that this week W Hotels in New York introduced a new service for couples who tie the knot there: For $3,000 the social media concierge will do everything from live-tweet your ceremony and reception to blog about your big day, before and after.

Chelsea Thomas, a bride-to-be, says: "It's too much! I think it should be more intimate."

Thomas is certainly the only one who isn't buying into social media on her big day, but Nevarez thinks the W might be into something.

"This could be the right fit for the right couple," she says.

The W's social media team tells us they're already getting requests.

Things are looking up for cute little Cami King. Not only is her cancer in remission, she also just got to meet Mickey, Minnie and Elmo in Times Square. But, if you can believe it, there's something else this 4-year-old is even more excited about: Times Square is going gold. The chairman of the Times Square Advertising Coalition announced the crossroads of the world is going to light up in gold to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
