End of Windows XP support spells trouble for some

Microsoft will end support for the persistently popular Windows XP on Tuesday, and the move could put everything from the operations of heavy industry to the identities of everyday people in danger.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

It was October of 2001 when Windows XP went on sale to the public, giving Windows users a whole new look and a whole new experience.

But now, more than 12 years later, Microsoft has ended its support of the product, meaning no more security updates -- and that could leave millions of people who still use Windows XP vulnerable to viruses and other attacks.

Windows XP will still work, but it could become a ripe target for hackers, which means it is not a good idea to keep running it.

It looks like business as usual at the Microsoft store at Scottsdale Fashion Square, but actually this was a momentous day.  Because from now on, no more security updates, patches and fixes for Microsofts old XP operating system.

"We have given you six years to get there, but with 8.1, you are protected with real-time updates," said Microsoft's Jason Senton.

Windows 8.1 is the newest Microsoft operating system.  It has built-in security like Apple's operating system, so you don't hae to buy security software.

One of the devices Microsoft hopes XP users will graduate to is the Surface Pro 2 -- with best features of the laptop and a tablet.

We caught up with Ted Novetzke who brought in his old Compaq computer.  He's getting a new computer and he's not looking back.

The cost to install Windows 8.1?  $119 for each device.

Microsoft says it will transfer your old data for free if you bring your computer into the store and it will take about an hour, give or take.
