BMX battle in Gilbert: Town, BMX USA want to build track near homes

GILBERT, Ariz. -

A battle is brewing over BMX in Gilbert.  The city is considering a plan to build a 4,000 seat BMX supercross track, but some people living near the site have concerns.

The proposed site is at Germann and Greenfield.

USA BMX will use 10 acres there and use another 20 acres south of that for parking.

There will be a large public bike track on the northwest corner.

Those who would be living closest to the track are concerned about traffic and noise, while others are concerned about cost.

Dozens showed up for a meeting Tuesday night at City Council chambers to discuss the proposed track, which includes a BMX arena, training facilities, museum and bike park.

If built, it's expected to draw up to 8,000 people for special events.

USA BMX, who wants to build the facility, was at the informational meeting, as were a number of kids and families who showed up in their BMX gear to support the project.

But a number of concerned citizens also showed up.  Some worried about finances.  The city has talked about securing a bond to help fund the project and some say they don't want tax dollars used.

Others are concerned about home values, noise and traffic.

They're trying to get the proposal nixed.

"It's outstanding.. it takes the town, puts it on the world stage. It has the opportunity to truly bring Olympic level athletes here on a week in, week out basis to be a part of the fabric of the community, but probably more than anything, it creates recreational opportunity for Gilbert kids week in and week out," said John David, USA BMX's Chief Operating Officer.

"Nobody has said there is anything wrong with the sport, the families that participate in it.  It is great for kids.  This isn't the right place and it shouldn't be with public funds," said Mike Webb, a concerned resident.

Tuesday's meeting was the second of its kind where they discussed details of a potential agreement that could go before the council at a later date.
