This Could Be Phoenix: Finding ways to better downtown

Posted: Updated:

Do you ever see an empty lot and wish it could be something more?

One group in the valley is thinking the same thing and they're doing something about it.

They're working to better downtown Phoenix with their project, This Could Be Phoenix.

Look all around downtown Phoenix and imagine a city full of everything you'd ever need, plus the luxuries of the suburbs.

That's exactly what Quinn Whissen did, and she acted on it.

"A lot of people choose to leave to the suburbs and get their lawns and get their private areas, but how can we build that amenity in downtown Phoenix and keep those millennials when they choose to start having kids," said Whissen.

Whissen lives in downtown Phoenix and an organization she co-founded is working on renderings of areas in the city.

"We did an envision project imagining this street-scape to be more lightly. So, we took out a lane and we put in bike lanes, we popped up some trees and made little parklets and we were contacted by some of the people that represent the owners there and we've been talking with the city and the streets department," said Whissen.

Some of the renderings are also of the old circles store downtown and some empty lots.

She's also trying to think of a way to bring a grocery store downtown Phoenix.

"I think that's our dream one day is to actually have one of these envisioned projects come to life and say, 'Look what the community process can do when we engage people, we get them excited about the city they live in'," said Whissen.
