Scottsdale Unified to decide school-day changes

Posted: Updated:

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - The Scottsdale Unified School District governing board is meeting to decide how the school day might change next year.

The district is facing a budget gap of more than $4 million.

It has proposed reducing art, music and physical education classes in grades kindergarten through five.

The move would save $1.5 million, but result in the elimination of about 30 teaching jobs.

Students would have classes known as "specials" half as often if the board approves the move.

When students are at "specials," classroom teachers use the time for preparation as required in their contracts.

With fewer "specials," the prep time must be made up during the school day.

The district proposed two options - reduce every school day by 20 minutes or have one early-release day per week.
