Only On Fox: Heated Dispute Turns Into Brawl

Posted: Updated:

Only on Fox a heated dispute turns into a brawl, and Fox 29’s cameras were there to catch it.

Authorities say the illegal demolition of a vacant factory triggered a confrontation that turned violent in Philadelphia’s Nicetown section on Thursday.

Fox 29’s Bruce Gordon reports.

Police took down a property owner. Authorities say the illegal demolition of a vacant factory triggered a confrontation that turned violent.

“Mr. Pettiway was very agitated, and he was not amenable to discussing the situation,” said Police Civil Affairs Captain Stephen Glenn.

That situation began light hearted fashion as a combination of peaceful protest and block party. Property owner Stephen Pettiway staged a brief sit in at the site of a vacant factory at 17th and Colorado in a morning interview with Fox 29, he described himself as a partner in the site's ownership group Samaritans Ink.

He said the city was preparing to demolish the place, as eminently, dangerous and would likely overcharge for the job. And so, he did the demo himself.

“We saying that we didn't pull permits. We saying, yes, there was asbestos in there. I did not want the city of Philadelphia to just take our building,"  said Pettiway.

Pettiway had plenty of supporters some of whom briefly joined him in his morning sit in.

“I support him. Yes, I’m 100%. because you shouldn't need a permit to knock your own building down,” said one supporter.

Moments after the brawl, Pettiway was hauled away by Civil Affairs Officers as uniformed police were called to the scene to calm the crowd.

The illegal demo left the scene full of asbestos, so the cleanup will be far more expensive.

Pettiway is behind bars, and under quarantine after claiming he is contaminated with asbestos.
