Family Dollar security guard shoots attempted carjacker

Posted: Updated:
A 47-year-old retired Detroit Police officer, now working as a security guard, shot a man who was attempting to carjack a woman Friday night.

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody says this occurred shortly after 8 p.m. at the Dexter Family Dollar, near Fullerton Street on Detroit's west side.

The guard was on-duty when he observed three armed black males attempt to carjack the woman in the store's parking lot.

As he attempted to stop the crime, the would-be carjackers pointed a gun at him. The guard responded quickly, drawing his weapon and opening fire.

The three suspects fled the scene on foot. Police responded quickly and found one of the men lying in the street, shot in the stomach and his right arm. That man, described as a 23 year-old black male, was listed in critical condition late Friday night.

The other two suspects fled on foot.
