iPhone Feature Logs Location History

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA - There is a new feature on your iPhone that you'll want to know about.   You might find it helpful, or you might find it just another invasion of your privacy.

We are talking about an Apple feature called "Frequent Locations" which logs where your phone has been.  It's buried four swipes into settings on iPhone's latest operating system - iOS-7.   First, let me show you how to get there.

Let's start in 'settings' - go into 'privacy' - at the top you'll see 'location services'.  Scroll to the very bottom - all the way down.   Go into 'system services'.  Click that and there you are at 'frequent locations'.  And here is where you'll have to make a decision about whether you want this feature.

If you're having troubled getting 'frequent locations' to show up, try turning on 'status bar icon'.

Here's what the 'frequent locations' feature does:  It creates a general history of where you've been  - mainly home, work, school - places you visit regularly.  Go in deeper and that's where it gets really specific.

It's what Apple calls "Next Destination" and here's how you make it work for you. Turn on this feature called 'improve maps'.  By doing this, Apple will start to send you notifications of travel times to those frequently visited places. This is really handy if you're a commuter.

Now, in order to get it to notify you, turn on one more thing.  Go to 'notification center' in 'settings' and give the green light to 'next destination'.

Who has access to this information?  Well, on Apple's Web site it says the data is kept on the device and not sent to Apple without consent. They say it's used simply to personalize your map experience.
