Robber Chucks Bottles Of Booze, Clerk Fights Back

Posted: Updated:

SAN JOSE, Calif. – A robbery gets completely out of control when a man takes a bottle of Jack Daniels and throws it at the clerk, leading to an all-out fight.

Fox's Azenith Smith reports that this surveillance video, taken inside Tip Top Liquors in San Jose back on June 16 at 7:40 p.m., captures a customer behind the counter holding a bottle of whisky. He grabs some cigarettes and puts them in his pocket all while talking to the cashier.

He then gets a case of beer and exchanges more words.

Before you know it, he starts throwing bottles of alcohol including the Jack Daniels.

The video also shows the clerk fighting back with what appears to be a stick with some sort of metal object on the end.

The video is 43-seconds long, but sheriff deputies say the confrontation lasted at good two minutes. What you don't see is the robber had already been behind the counter and had been throwing bottles moments before.

Also, the violence gets worse at the end.

"The next part is actually the clerk is pushed to the ground, and the suspect's on top of him, hitting him several times," Santa Clara Co. Sheriff's Dept. Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup said.

Another customer breaks up the fight, and the robber gets away with cigarettes and alcohol in hand.

"We've asked around in our department. We've never actually seen a liquor store robbery where the suspect starts throwing bottles at the clerk. That's a little extreme."

The video is just as alarming to customers.

"That is tragedy. What's going on over here? Oh, he's behind the counter. Wow," Customer Maurice Wynn said. "That's crazy. I've never seen anyone rob a store for alcohol."

Another customer, Dennis Dizon of San Jose, said, "That's very shocking to like, you can ruin your life, go to prison, go to jail just for a case of beer."

Sheriff deputies say the best tool to catch the criminal is the video and the public's help.
