Woman arrested after toddler burned in tub

A babysitter in North Carolina was charged with child abuse after leaving a toddler in a tub of scalding water for nearly a half hour.

According to a spokesperson for the Gaston County Police Department, Cassandra Willard, 25, of Gastonia, North Carolina, had left the 15-month-old girl in a bathtub while the hot water was running.

They said she was not able to hear the child's screams because she had headphones on and was listening to loud music.

The toddler was rushed to the hospital by her father. She suffered first-, second- and third-degree burns on much of her body.

Police said several other small children were in Willard's care at the time of the incident. They were not injured.

According to jail records, Willard had prior arrests on drug trafficking charges. She was released from jail on bond.
