Detroit man fed up with crime and blight cleans block himself

DETROIT (WJBK) - Eleven vacant homes are on Sorrento Street, and those are just the ones you can see. Neighbors living there are quite literally in the weeds.

Fed up with calling the city to knock down these vacant homes, one neighbor known as Dre is trying his best to maintain the block.

"[I] maintain the lawn in a few of these houses, try to keep the trash picked up, try to keep on the city and hopefully they'll do their part," Dre says.

He says some of these homes have been vacant for nine years and have been on the demolition list for three years, but the longer they sit the taller the weeds grow - to hide what's going on inside.

"Police come over here chasing people and they come over in this area and they disappear. They can't find them! The weeds done swallowed them up!" Dre says.

One home was raided Thursday for drugs and prostitution. Another one, Dre says, has been leaking water for two years. On another property, a dead tree is just a light breeze away from falling onto a power line.

"This area is being forgotten," Dre says.

He got some unexpected help doing yard work from Greater Grace Church Friday afternoon, and after Fox 2's calls to the city three homes are now listed for immediate demolition.

DTE Energy has said it will come check out the dead tree, and the Water and Sewerage Department was out to shut off that water.

"Doing a good job so far. Keep up the good work, but please, just don't forget about us," Dre says.
