SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - On Sunday night, police in Southfield found Detroit City Councilman Scott Benson slumped over behind the wheel of his 2008 Crown Victoria near 8 Mile Road and the Southfield Freeway.

He was placed under arrest for operating while impaired and released on a $500 bond. A blood test was conducted. Police say it could take 30 days for the results to come back.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and City Council President Brenda Jones issue a joint statement following the news of Benson's arrest:

"We have recently learned that misdemeanor charges are being sought against Councilman Scott Benson. We have no first-hand facts about the matter and we will not speculate. Instead we will let the judicial system proceed in its normal course. In the meantime, we will remain focused on getting the City's business done."

The 44-year-old councilman who represents District 3 and his attorney had no comment for reporters after Benson posted bond and walked out of the Southfield Police Department lockup.

Fox 2 checked into Benson's driving record which shows several suspensions for unpaid fees dating back to 2011, some minor traffic infractions and a hold on his license for unpaid parking tickets in Detroit.
