Tropical Storm Arthur expected to reach Hurricane strength

Tropical Storm Arthur expected to reach Hurricane strength

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

As of 5 a.m. Wednesday, Tropical Storm Arthur is still churning off the east coast of Florida about 90 miles east of Cape Canaveral with maximum winds estimated at 60 mph and moving northward at 6 mph.

The cold front that will provide north Georgia relief from the heat and humidity tomorrow will help accelerate Arthur to the northeast and will take it along the eastern seaboard for the next few days. Strengthening is forecast to category one hurricane intensity (about 75mph winds) within the next 24 hours.

From there, it will make a close approach to the coastal areas of North Carolina (if not landfall along the Outer Banks) overnight Thursday night into early Friday morning.

Between now and Friday, rough surf and rip currents will be a threat for all coastal areas of Georgia and the Carolinas, something to be mindful of if you are traveling the beach for Independence Day.

Over the weekend, models are still in agreement that Arthur will remain offshore of the northeastern US. On this forecast path, outer bands of rain may spoil the holiday weekend there, but the biggest tropical impacts would largely stay offshore.

Since there is more uncertainty in the forecast path once it passes the Outer Banks of North Carolina, changes in expected impacts for the northeastern US can change. The latest tropical updates are always available at MY FOX HURRICANE online.
