DETROIT (WJBK) -  Ten people were arrested during a Detroit water shutoff protest Thursday morning.

The large crowd of community members and local religious leaders gathered in front of Homerich Wrecking Incorporated on East Grand Boulevard.

Detroit police say the people taken into custody were blocking the entrance, keeping department employees from getting in.

The facility is a private corporation with a 2-year, $5.6 million contract to shut off residential water service to customers with past due bills.

The protestors say water is a human right and people in the city shouldn't have to suffer because they can't afford their bills.

For those who have an overdue water bill or who are living without water, a $1 million grant is being contributed to help pay the bills. You can also seek help from the Detroit Water Brigade.

Department officials also ask that you tell them directly. "Our objective is for you not to be without water but if you have an affordability issue there is only one way we would know that - and you would have to let us know," says Darryl Latimer, deputy director of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department.
