National Gay Blood Drive comes to Bloomfield Hills

Posted: Updated:
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -  The National Gay Blood Drive event made a stop in Bloomfield Hills Friday.

The event was held in dozens of cities across the United States and asked those who can donate blood to do so in place of the gay and bisexual men who cannot.

The gay blood drive is all part of a nationwide effort to encourage the FDA to change its ban on donations from gay and bisexual men, which was instituted during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

So much blood is needed and supplies are always low. Just here in Michigan, the Red Cross must collect at least 900 units a day to meet patient needs.

The American Red Cross does not support this lifetime deferral for gay men. Instead, it prefers a one-year deferral. Organizers of this event are asking everyone to check out their petition on whitehouse.gov and consider signing it.
