Philly Fans Turn Out To Watch World Cup Final

Posted: Updated:

The excitement of the World Cup reached a fever pitch with Sunday's final match-up between Germany and Argentina.

For a month, fans across the world, including here, have been captivated by the game that unites all nations.

World Cup fever has infected Sack's Playground in South Philadelphia. Under-17s from the Kensington Soccer Club squared off against King of Prussia, every pass, shot and save, were attempts to emulate the world's best footballers.

"A lot of these kids have been watching every game of the World Cup and they’ll say if they see something that Messi does, or something another player does, they’ll say I want to try that, I want to give that a shot," Kensington Soccer Club Coach Jerry Savage said.

More jerseys could be found uptown in Northern Liberties at the Piazza at Schmidts. But this group wasn't equipped with cleats – just their vocal chords.

"I just see more friends, more younger people getting into soccer. It's a growing sport in the US," soccer fan Brenda Snow said.

The popularity of the World Cup has not only been big for TV ratings nationwide. It has also meant on a local level, that more players are coming out to the pitch.

"We weren't able to field a team of this age group a few years ago," Savage said. "To be able to watch games from any country from around the world and seeing their passion and their excitement, it’s really grown on people."

The hype also helped the Philadelphia Union score their largest attendance of the season last night.

And the next generation of Philadelphia soccer hopes the buzz is here to stay.

"I think because the US had a good year this year in the World Cup, I think it made it more popular and more people started liking it," Kensington Soccer Club Captain Isaiah Gonzalez said.

FOX 29's Drew Dickman has more on the impact of the World Cup on local soccer in this video report.

And here's something to look forward to: The World Cup in 2018 will be hosted by Russia and shown exclusively on Fox.
