5 fat-burning foods you should try

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. - Tired of working out with no payoff, or counting calories and still not losing weight?

Healthy chef Nancy Waldeck at the Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital pulled together five fat-burning foods you need to discover:

   #1 Chili peppers.

Waldeck says “Any kind of chili pepper contains something called Capsaicin, which is great for speeding up our metabolism a little bit. It adds so much flavor.”

Another great-for-you food? #2: fruit, with the skin still on it.

Waldeck says think, “Apples, pears, this time of year, berries, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, cherries.  The skin really ramps up the fat burning power of that fruit. The skin provides fiber and fiber helps our metabolism work better.”

Next up? #3: beans.  Waldeck says, “Beans are so good for us. Beans bring protein to the table, fiber to the table and they keep us full for longer.”

Same thing with her #4 fat-burning food: whole grains, like quinoa.    If you haven’t tried it, do, says Waldeck.

Even gluten-free folks can eat quinoa, which absorbs the flavor of other foods like a sponge.  So, it can be spicy or sweet.

Quinoa is a “super” food because, Waldeck says, “It contains all the essential amino acids to be a complete protein. That's like a hamburger in a bowl right? I know that sounds funny, but you get that same protein."

The #5 fat-burning food isn’t a food at all.  It’s green tea. Waldeck says "Love green tea, love it, love it, love it!  And especially here in the South, we drink tea, all year long."   Green tea contains a compound called EGCG, which can temporarily speed up your metabolism.

Yes, you still have to exercise.  Waldeck says, “We don't want to drink green tea and stop walking in the afternoon, this is something that's a great add-on, plus it tastes good.  That's a real bonus in my book!.”

Waldeck recommends working these foods into your diet.  The foods aren’t exotic, or expensive, why makes them a good option for most of us.  Later this week, she’ll show us some simple recipes to try using these fat-burning foods.
