Small windshield crack could cause big problems

Posted: Updated:

It's one of the most important safety features on your vehicle. We're not talking about tires or your steering wheel, we're talking about your windshield. Just a few weeks ago, a Massachusetts driver got quite a scare when an axe came straight through the windshield.

It acts as the first line of defense to keep debris away, yet so many people are driving around with chips or cracks. Ask an expert and you'll hear the same message, act quickly when you get a chip or a crack in your windshield. Don't wait until it's large enough to bother you, because then it could be too late.

"It goes all along, keep going, keep going, to there," Indrea Tillison points out the chip and crack in her windshield. She can't forget the sound, "It was 285 around South Cobb Drive one morning and I heard the loudest boom and I honestly thought that a tire and went out."

Instead, it was a rock. What started as a chip, quickly spread across the windshield. "Forty-five minutes later, I got to work and I was like, 'oh my gosh,'" exclaims Indrea.

Indrea's concern, was obviously her visibility. "If I can't see a car coming out, or if someone whips around me, it is an obstacle in my vision so we have to get it fixed," she adds.

Le-Bron Blanton had a hard time finding a good windshield repair in town, so he opened his Superb Windshield Repair a few years back. "We actually explain to them exactly what it is we're going to do because most people are having their first ever windshield repair," Le-Bron says.

His number one piece of advice, get that problem fixed as soon as you see it. "You should get at it right away, don't wait around. Most people are waiting too long. When they say they got a crack that just happened yesterday, actually the chip may have happened a month ago and now it's cracked," he states.

Le-Bron says, in most cases, the longer you wait, the more of a risk you're taking with your safety. "You want your windshield to be as strong as possible if it has an impact," Le-Bron states. "When you have it partially cracked already, it takes less force to finish you off."

Indrea is listening to the advice, "If something hits it we have already compromised the windshield by it being hit, now we've got to fix it because if something else hits it I'm just afraid that it would completely crack."

Le-Bron's done some unofficial research of his own and he estimates around 25 percent of drivers have a chip or a crack they haven't fixed. He believes a lot of those are still from the ice storms in January and February.

Le-Bron also has a big warning about replacing a windshield. He says it is much better to repair a small chip or crack than to have the whole windshield replaced. Of course it's cheaper, but he also says it keeps the original seal from the factory intact, which is the safest way to go
