Corrections officer recovering after inmate attack

ATLANTA, Ga. -

A corrections officer at the Atlanta city jail is recovering after more than a dozen inmates attacked him on Wednesday.

The jailer reportedly was attacked when he went into a cell block to try and retrieve a cell phone from an inmate.

Sources familiar with the incident say prisoners, who were segregated due to their background, piled on to the officer and stomped him to the floor.

A second jailer came in responding to a health call, and he was also attacked.

The officer who was badly beaten is being treated at Grady Memorial Hospital and is expected to be released Thursday night. The second jailer attacked was not hospitalized.

The Chief of Police warned his staff on Thursday that if he finds out someone allowed the phone inside, that person will be fired.

FOX 5 will continue to update this developing story.
