Eustis commissioner wants city employees armed
EUSTIS, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A Eustis commissioner wants some city employees who have concealed weapons permit to be able to carry a gun to work.
“We all know that when somebody comes in shooting, you can’t call police, you can’t call 911,” said Commissioner Anthony Sabatini. “Gun free zones do nothing but protect criminals, they keep criminals safe.”
His push for change comes after 17 people were killed during a shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida last week. He says in active shooter situations, law-abiding employees with the proper permits could keep other people safe.
“A librarian for example. If somebody came into a library and started shooting up the place, what are you going to do? The only thing you could possibly do is arm one of the librarians, a competent, law abiding employee,” he said.
Sabatini says his fellow commissioners shot down his idea during a meeting, but he’s not giving up.
“No, this is just the beginning. If it doesn’t end up being successful in Eustis off the get go, other cities in this county will pick it up absolutely,” Sabatini said.
