OCALA, Fla. (WOGX FOX 51) - Marion County Fire Rescue units on Thursday evening responded to a multi-vehicle crash near mile marker 366, along southbound lanes of Interstate 75.
Callers reported the incident around 7:20 p.m., saying that a semi tractor trailer was on top of a white vehicle and people were trapped inside.
Units arrived on scene to find two semi tractor trailers and three vehicles involved. A semi carrying produce was on its side, with a white passenger vehicle underneath it, entrapping the driver and passenger. Crews cut the top of the semi tractor trailer to get access to the car.
"After removing the trucks payload, they utilized the 'ram' to reshape the car's roof, thus giving the patients a chance to breathe," read a post on the agency's Facebook page. "They removed the female passenger from the car. The adult male driver was extricated from the vehicle once they removed the door."
Authorities say both the driver and passenger of the white vehicle were transported to a hospital as trauma alerts. Three other were also taken to a nearby hospital. The conditions of all those involved in the crash were not immediately released.
A wrecker was able to lift the trailer enough for rescuers to search the vehicle for any additional occupants, and none were found.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
