FHP found the dog, now named "Trooper", on Wednesday, hours before Hurricane Milton made landfall near Tampa. The alleged suspect told authorities that he was headed to Georgia to escape the hurricane and admitted to leaving the dog behind.

Volusia County officials are warning people not to visit the beach due to debris and strong rip currents following Hurricane Milton. "Right now, the ocean is plagued with debris that can cause serious harm. The waves and currents can pull under the strongest of swimmers," the county said in a news release.
