The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. The water could reach heights of 12 to 15 feet above ground.

Hurricane Idalia continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico on its way to Florida, where it's now expected to make landfall as an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane. In the 11 p.m. update, Hurricane Idalia has sustained winds of 110 mph, which makes it a powerful category 2 hurricane. It becomes a major category 3 hurricane when its winds reach 111 mph.
