Deputy-involved shooting reported in Marion County

The Marion County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting in Citra.  No deputies are reported injured, authorities said.

A Marion County sheriff's deputy shot someone on the property of Phoenix House Rehabilitation Facility, a drug addiction treatment center, the Sheriff's Office said.   Just before 1 p.m. on Thursday, deputies responded to assist a probation officer in locating and taking into custody a drug offender who had violated a court-mandated parole.

"As deputies responded, the suspect fled to a heavily wooded area behind the property. When approached, the subject was uncooperative with deputies’ demands and then violently confronted the pursuing deputies. It was at this point when one of the deputies shot and killed the suspect," said Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods.

The Sheriff's Office did not immediately name the man who was shot, nor did it release the names of the deputies involved in this incident.  The sheriff said the deputy who shot the man is a 12-year veteran with the department.

The investigation has been joined by agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
