Driver hits 2 on Florida beach after 'medical episode'

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office says an elderly driver struck two people on the beach after suffering a "medical episode," which caused him to veer out of the traffic lane at low speed.

The 78-year-old male driver, from Mt. Dora, struck the two pedestrians just after 1 p.m. on Thursday, at 401 North The Beach, in New Smyrna Beach. His vehicle was stopped by a passenger within his car in conjunction with a nearby pedestrian who reached into the vehicle to shift it into park.

The victims are described as a 44-year-old woman visiting from Montreal, Canada and a 35-year-old man from Oviedo. T he victims suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Halifax Hospital for medical treatment. The victims are not related and were not known to each other.

The driver did not require medical care on scene.  Charges are pending.
