George Zimmerman's gun up for auction
LAKE MARY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - An online gun auction site says it pulled down George Zimmerman's listing for the gun he said was used to kill Trayvon Martin, and it wants no part in his listing or the publicity it has drawn. The gun is now being auctioned on another site. Read more.
FOX 35 was the first to report about the auction and spoke to Zimmerman on Wednesday about the sale of the 9 mm Kel-Tec PF-9 pistol he said was used to shoot and kill Martin on February 26, 2012. "I recently received it back from the Department of Justice. They took it after my trial, after I was exonerated," he said.
Zimmerman has said he was defending himself when he shot and killed Martin, an unarmed black 17-year-old. The shooting sparked protests and a national debate about race relations.
We reached out to Trayvon Martin's family attorney for comment. While the family did not want to talk about Zimmerman, they gave us a statement, which reads, "The Trayvon Martin Foundation is committed to its mission of ending senseless gun violence in the United States. This election season, we are laser focused on furthering that mission. As such, the foundation has no comment on the actions of that person."
Zimmerman says he has had death threats while in hiding and has had several more after putting this gun up for auction. "What I've decided to do is not cower," he said. "I'm a free American. I can do what I want with my possessions."
