Hurricane Dorian nears the Bahamas as Category 4 storm

ORLANDO, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - In its 11 p.m. Hurricane Dorian update, The National Hurricane Center still expects the Category 4 storm to stay off the eastern coast of Florida.

Dorian is moving west at 8 mph, with winds of 150 mph.

Chief Meteorologist Glenn Richards says Dorian is expected to slam into the northern Bahamas on Sunday with 140-155 mph winds, just shy of a Category 5 storm.

Richards says Dorian will begin to make its turn north on Monday, and is still forecasted to be approximately 120 miles offshore of Brevard County at its nearest point to the east coast.

That means Dorian could bring 3-5 inches of rain to our coastal areas and winds near 39 mph.

As always, officials say Florida is not out of the woods.
