School security guard arrested for fighting with student

A Seminole County school security guard was arrested after allegedly choking a student while attempting to break up a fight.

According to police, the school resource officer assigned to Winter Springs High School witnessed an interaction between 44-year-old Deron Smiley and several students Wednesday morning.

During the interaction, one of the students began arguing with Smiley, who was seen grabbing, throwing and choking the student. Police say there was also a threat made by Smiley that he would “throw the student over the second story railing to the ground.”

After the resource officer separated the two involved, the situation was under control and Smiley was placed under arrest and transported to jail. According to police it was discovered during an interview that Smiley had firearms stored in his vehicle, which violates Florida state law.

Smiley is also currently employed as the Winter Springs girls’ basketball coach. He is facing charges of child abuse without great bodily harm, battery and possession of firearms on school property.
