Two fatal crashes cause major delays on Volusia County interstates

Interstates in Volusia County moved very slow on Wednesday morning, as multiple crashes overnight are creating serious delays.

A fatal crash occurred in Deltona overnight on eastbound Interstate 4 (I-4) at exit 108. Multiple vehicles were involved in this crash. Two lanes were blocked right now, but have since opened up.

Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) says that a Nissan SUV, driven by 35-year-old Adolofo Lopez, was traveling eastbound on I-4. A tow truck was on the right shoulder, as it had just loaded up a vehicle from a previous crash. The tow truck traveled into the right lane of eastbound I-4, but was struck in the rear by the Nissan. Lopez suffered fatal injuries.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating another two early morning accidents on I-95 southbound after a wrong-way driver was killed in one crash near Edgewater.

FHP said officers were responding to a wrong-way driver incident just before 1 a.m. when the 23 year-old man from Daytona Beach, identified as Devon Standish, fatally struck another car head-on two miles past Indian River Boulevard at mile marker 242.

FHP said the second car briefly caught fire and first responders pulled the other driver out of the car and transported him to the hospital in critical condition. Troopers are investigating whether or not alcohol played a factor in the crash.

A second accident happened in the same area when a 55-year-old man driving a dump truck struck a UPS semi-truck. FHP said the UPS driver was slowing down as he approached the first accident when the dump truck driver hauling hot asphalt struck his truck.

The driver of the dump truck was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the UPS semi-truck suffered minor injuries.

Asphalt from the dump truck spilled onto the highway and crews spent hours scraping it off and fixing the road. FHP expected the interstate to reopen by mid-afternoon.
