Work begins to reconstruct portions of A1A damanged by Hurricane Matthew

Construction crews started working on State Road A1A in Flagler Beach on Monday.  Portions of the historic road were washed away when Hurricane Matthew brushed Florida's Atlantic Cosat.

Last week, Governor Rick Scott told the Department of Transportation to expedite fixing the roadway, adding that he wanted to get the community back to work as quickly and safely as possible.

The FDOT picked Halifax Paving INC to do the work, after five companies submitted bids for the job. The cost for the project is $3.95 million.  The timeline to get this done is 45 days.

The area damaged badly by Hurricane Matthew covers about one-and-a-half miles, from South 9th Street to South 22nd Street in Flagler Beach.  There are now detours around the area.  The main focus with this project is to re open State Road A1A for two-way traffic with temporary lanes.

There is an open house if you want to learn more about this road project,  scheduled for Wednesday, October 26, at the Flagler Beach City Hall from  2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
