Accused driver in deadly hit-and-run to stay in jail

The semi-truck driver who troopers say hit and killed two men on the side of the Interstate 95 in Palm Bay will stay in jail until his trial. This morning, a judge denied bond for 36-year-old Hassan Abdirahman Sheikh Ali. Officials arrested the man in Palm Beach County hours after the crash. Ali was in court twice this morning, because a judge said he was uncooperative when he claimed he didn't understand any English in his first court room visit.

1 dead, 1 hurt in overnight DeLand shooting

Police say one person was killed and another was injured following an early morning shooting at McCabe’s Bar in DeLand. The person killed has been identified as 32-year-old Keshod Harris. Officials said the suspect in the shooting fled the scene and has not yet been located. Authorities believe about 30 to 40 other people were in the bar at the time. Police presence and resources have been increased in the area to ensure the safety of the community.

Oviedo Aquatic Center officially opens for the summer

The Oviedo Aquatic Center has officially opened for the summer. The city is kicking things off with a free water safety event featuring local vendors, swim lessons, information on joining the swim team and more.

Ocoee man rescues alligator found under his truck

An Ocoee man was shocked when he went to get into his truck and found an alligator underneath. The man as able to safely wrangle the gator using a broom before then grabbing him, taping his mouth shut and calling police for help. The gator was then released back into a nearby lake.

Suspect in deadly hit-and-run crash expected in court

A deadly hit-and-run crash shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Palm Bay on Friday morning. Officials said two surveyors were killed in the crash. Troopers have now located and arrested the semi-truck driver who they said fled the scene of the crash. Hassan Abdirahman Sheikh Ali, 36, is facing two counts of hit-and-run involving death. He is expected in court this morning.

Fires break out across Florida amid ongoing drought conditions

Crews across Florida and Central Florida are working to contain ongoing brush fires. A mandatory evacuation order was issued for residents in the Silver Springs area of Marion County on Friday due to a 150-acre active wildfire. Meanwhile, a 116-acre brush fire is burning in Osceola County in the Holopaw area. Three fires are also burning in Volusia County.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez blasts Trump administration

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hosted a town hall event on Friday, May 2, in Jackson Heights, New York. At the event, she blasted the Trump administration on issues ranging from free speech to DOGE spending cuts and immigration. At one point, the four-term congresswoman called out border czar Tom Homan by name, challenging him to "come for me." There has been some buzz about Ocasio-Cortez running for president in 2028.

DeLand police give update on bar shooting

Witnesses told investigators that a fight broke out between several men inside McCabe's Bar, escalating when one of the individuals pulled out a gun and opened fire.
