Publix frozen berry recall given FDA’s most serious classification

Published August 19, 2026 11:00 PM EDT

Publix recalled packages of its GreenWise Organic Frozen Whole Blueberries and Frozen Whole Mixed Berries.

An ongoing recall on frozen blueberries and mixed berries that were sold at Publix grocery stores and have been linked to at least a dozen confirmed E. coli cases is being listed under the Food and Drug Administration’s most serious classification.

Big picture view:

The notice regarding GreenWise Organic Whole Frozen Blueberries and Whole Frozen Mixed Berries was classified as a Class I recall, which indicates that the federal agency suspects that there is a reasonable probability that use or exposure to the product would cause severe health concerns. That classification was confirmed on Tuesday, the document showed.

The backstory:

The recall, which was issued in early July and expanded several weeks later, has come to include all lots of the affected berries, including both 10-ounce and 48-ounce bags. The items were listed by the FDA as:

  • GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 10-ounce (UPC: 41415-06453)
  • GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 48-ounce (UPC: 41415-12053)
  • GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 10-ounce (UPC: 41415-06753)
  • GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 48-ounce (UPC: 41415-12153)

Sold in 8 States

Publix indicated that the berries were sold in stores across eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.  Publix stopped selling the products, but health officials want to make sure that people who may have purchased them and stuck them in their freezers prior to the recall do not eat them.

What you can do:

Customers are urged not to consume the recalled products and should either discard them or return them to a Publix store for a full refund.

Customers with questions can contact Publix Customer Care at 800-242-1227 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is continuing to investigate the multistate E. coli outbreak linked to frozen blueberries.

Why you should care:

The original recall announcement explained that, between May 11 and June 5, there had been 12 confirmed cases of people getting stomach illnesses from an E. coli strain. Those infected by E. coli can experience severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, among other symptoms.

According to Publix, E. coli O145 can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that may be bloody, and vomiting. While most healthy people recover within about a week, some infections can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious complication that is more common in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
