Toyota is recalling tens of thousands of its most popular model over an issue that could cause the engine to lose power at high speeds.

Big picture view:

The Japanese automaker announced the recall of some 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrids, indicating that approximately 31,000 of the SUVs in the U.S. would be affected.

The backstory:

According to its statement, the plug-in hybrid’s electronic control unit can suffer a fault that shuts down the system while someone is driving. If the vehicle is going at a high rate of speed, Toyota said, the engine could lose power and a crash could occur.

What's next:

The fix will require owners to take their recalled RAV4s to a Toyota dealership where a software update will be installed on the ECU at no cost.

What you can do:

Owners of the recalled SUVs will be notified about the recall by early December, the statement indicated. People can also check to see if their vehicle is included by going to Toyota’s recall website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall website and entering their vehicle identification number.
