Students to race custom-built electric go-karts

Local high school students interested in future careers in STEM are heading to Daytona International Speedway on Tuesday to race their custom-built electric go-karts in a test of efficiency, thanks in part to Florida Power & Light Company (FPL). In collaboration with NASCAR, students will test their vehicles on the track and enjoy behind-the-scenes access and other educational activities at the iconic motorsport venue.

Oceanview Avenue Beach Approach to temporarily close

To support the next phase of Volusia County’s beach restoration project in Ponce Inlet — conducted in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Inland Navigation District — the Oceanview Avenue Beach Approach will temporarily close beginning Thursday, May 29. Starting next week, crews will begin hauling and placing sand along the coast, beginning at Sunglow Pier and continuing south to the North Jetty.

DeLand man arrested in shooting that injured 16-year-old

A 25-year-old DeLand man has been arrested in connection with a weekend shooting that injured a 16-year-old boy riding home from a graduation party, authorities said. Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood shared the latest updates in the investigation during a press conference on Thursday morning.
