Parents arrested after 4-year-old twin boys are shot

Four-year-old twin boys are in the hospital after being shot inside their home, authorities said. Their mom and dad are both behind bars. According to a court appearance for one of the parents on Monday, at least one of the twins had to undergo surgery.

Two 4-year-old boys shot themselves over the weekend after finding a possibly unsecured gun in their home, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office. Both boys suffered critical injuries, OCSO said, though they were considered to be stable on Monday morning.

The boys' mom and dad have both been arrested in the wake of the shooting, deputies said.

What we know:

The shooting happened on Saturday morning at a home on Calais Circle in Orange County, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies said they were initially called to AdventHealth East Orlando after reports of two 4-year-old twins with gunshot wounds.

The children had been brought to the hospital by their parents, Keishara Goodrum, 39, and Maurice Bright, 40. Both children were later transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children for treatment.

Both parents told detectives that they did not see what happened, but heard a loud "pop" inside their home.

Goodrum said she drank heavily the night before, then went to the grocery store on Saturday morning. She was in the kitchen making breakfast when she heard what she believed was a gunshot.

Bright said he was outside on the patio cooking food on the grill.

Goodrum told deputies that she possibly forgot to secure her gun from the night before, leaving it under one of the couch cushions, according to the probable cause statement. She was arrested and booked into jail on two counts of child neglect with bodily harm.

Bright was booked into jail on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
