Deadly shooting of Ocala man believed to be 'random act of violence,' police say

Police officers responded to a deadly shooting around 3:30 p.m. in the Ocala Historic District, just east of downtown. 

Officers said they found a man dead in front of his home. 

What we know:

Ocala police received a report of a suspicious person shortly near SE Fifth Street and Southeast 11th Ave., followed minutes later by a deadly shooting about a block away, authorities said.

The initial caller told police he was approached by a man dressed in black who motioned for him to stop as he was leaving his driveway. The caller continued driving and reported seeing the man appear to been in possession of a pistol. Officers were immediately dispatched to the area.

Police said a second 911 call soon came in reporting a shooting east of where the first 911 call was made. Osceola Middle School was placed under a brief lockdown and several roads in the area were blocked as a precaution. 

An officer responding to the first call located a man matching the description two blocks south of the shooting scene on Southeast 11th Avenue. 

The man, identified as 29-year-old Isaac Ezekiel Toye, was detained and found to be in possession of a pistol, police said.

Other officers found the shooting victim, 64-year-old Harold Whitt Harper, in the front yard of his home. Harper had been gardening when he was shot and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Investigators said witness statements and evidence placed Toye at both scenes, and they have probable cause to charge him with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of homicide.

What we don't know:

Authorities did not say whether Toye has a history of mental illness or violence.

What they're saying:

Authorities said the shooting appears to have been a random act of violence.

"There is no indication that this was a targeted attack or that there are additional suspects. We are confident there is no further danger to the community," OPD said in a statement sent to FOX 35 News.

Police said there is no further threat to the community.

"Our hearts go out to the Harper family during this difficult time. We want to thank the residents of the neighborhood who came forward with information, helping us solve this case quickly."
