Lake County man arrested after allegedly threatening to kill during altercation

A Lake County man was arrested after allegedly assaulting and threatening another man with a firearm during a domestic dispute, according to sheriff's deputies.

What we know:

Gage Carpenter, 28, was arrested by Lake County deputies after allegedly assaulting a 34-year-old man and threatening to shoot him during a domestic altercation. 

The incident took place on the night of May 20 at a residence where both men were present. Deputies say the altercation escalated from a verbal argument to physical violence and ended with Carpenter allegedly pointing a handgun at the victim and threatening his life.

Authorities said they recovered a black and gold SIG Sauer P365 handgun from the home that matched the victim’s description. The weapon was not loaded. Carpenter was arrested near the scene roughly an hour later after being located by a helicopter and apprehended by a K-9 unit.

What we don't know:

It remains unclear what the relationship is between Carpenter and the victim or whether either man lived at the residence. Officials have not disclosed any potential motive behind Carpenter’s sudden outburst or what may have led to the extreme escalation. Additionally, it is unknown if Carpenter has a prior criminal history or if substance use may have been involved.

What they're saying:

According to the arrest report, Carpenter pointed the handgun at the victim and said, "If I had any bullets, I would kill you."

A witness at the scene told deputies she heard both individuals arguing and later observed Carpenter lift the handgun and threaten to shoot the victim on the front porch.

What's next:

Carpenter was taken into custody without further incident.  He is charged with felony battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery by strangulation, and resisting an officer without violence.
