Cristina Gonzalez was walking 6-month-old Louie in her DeLand neighborhood last week when she claims a much larger, unleashed dog charged them from behind. Louie was left with two broken legs and faces a long road to recovery that will likely require surgery. The DeLand Police Department confirmed they are actively looking into the incident.

Daytona Beach officer was fired after an arrest following an open container incident. Charges have been dropped against the officer. The police chief said the officers showed "poor judgment" during the stop, FOX 35's Chris Lindsay reported. David Anderson, 27, of Tennessee, was arrested shortly after midnight in Daytona Beach for an alleged open container violation. Police said in the report that Anderson threw the cork at the officer, which prompted the arrest. He was then handcuffed and Tased for allegedly resisting arrest, the report states.

"This did not occur. She moved toward me." That's the response from Edgewater Mayor Diezel Depew, who's accused of hitting a woman with a campaign sign. Though police responded to the incident, as of Aug. 10, no charges have been filed and no injuries have been reported. 

Daytona Beach city leaders weigh in on a proposed fee change for during the city's busy bike weeks. Leaders discussed how vendor permits are impacting local businesses, wanting to incentivize more year-round businesses to fill the empty lots. 

A two-year-old girl wandered into an Ocoee community pool area, and the gate locked behind her, leaving her mother helplessly trapped on the outside. Off-duty Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood was finishing a 40-mile bike ride nearby when he heard the mother's screams for help. Sheriff Chitwood used his bicycle as a ladder to climb over a fence topped with metal shards, successfully rescuing the toddler before she entered the water.

Volusia County deputies helped rescue 75 lost baby sea turtles. Sea turtle hatchlings use moonlight to guide themselves towards the ocean. However, artificial lighting can confuse their instincts, causing them to move inland toward roads instead of the ocean. Deputies helped collect the lost turtles and contacted Volusia County, who helped get them back to the ocean.

Middle schools in Volusia County will screen students through AI metal detectors. While school officials say safety is their top priority, they say the metal detectors have been "well-received" by the community and families. With artificial intelligence, the device can detect the "difference between a water bottle a weapon," FOX 35's Chris Lindsay demonstrated. 

Police have arrested the father of a 17-year-old accused of shooting and killing two teenagers in downtown DeLand. Daytron Etkins, 41, is accused of helping his son after the alleged shootings and "took steps intended to help him evade law enforcement," police said.

State Attorney Monique Worrell held a news conference on Wednesday to respond to criticism from Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood and State Attorney General James Uthmeier. Both officials questioned the criminal history and apparent outcomes regarding the suspect arrested in the double murder of two teenagers in downtown DeLand.
