CLERMONT, Fla. - Two East Ridge High School students were arrested Thursday after authorities said a gun was found on campus.
This prompted a lockdown of the campus, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
The backstory:
East Ridge High School in Clermont went on lockdown on Dec. 5 after school officials said they found a gun on campus.
The school district said a staff member discovered the weapon and immediately notified the school resource deputy, who began investigating and speaking with students. Deputies said they found a gun inside a metal lockbox and took two teens into custody.
Deputies brought in four canines trained to detect firearms and swept each building before the school was cleared. No one was injured during the incident, the sheriff's office said.
What they're saying:
One grandparent told FOX 35 they were relieved but shaken by the news.
"It's actually scary. It's so scary," said Brunilda Quant, adding that the thought of a school lockdown is enough to panic any family. "I’m glad they caught it in time and there wasn’t something much bigger," Quant added.
What's next:
Both students are facing charges of possession of a firearm by a minor and disruption of a school function and possession of a weapon on school grounds, the sheriff's office said.
