Authorities say the man, Ever Manuel Bonilla-Moran, is an undocumented immigrant and a suspected member of MS-13, a violent international gang. He barricaded himself inside a home before surrendering to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

What we don't know:

Specific charges against the suspect have not yet been disclosed.

The backstory:

ICE officials say Bonilla-Moran first illegally entered the U.S. without inspection by an immigration officer at a designated port of entry in April 2014 near Pharr, Texas.

The U.S. Border Patrol served him an order of expedited removal, and he was removed in May 2014.

Authorities say he then illegally re-entered the U.S. after his first removal at an unknown date and location.

Big picture view:

MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha, is a transnational gang originating in Central America, known for its extreme violence and presence in multiple U.S. cities. Federal authorities routinely conduct operations to locate and detain members suspected of involvement in criminal activity, especially those living in the country without documentation.

Local perspective:

The arrest has sparked concern among neighbors, who said they were startled by early morning loudspeaker commands in a community that is typically quiet and family-oriented. The backyard of the home included signs of ordinary suburban life — children’s toys, a swimming pool and a cornhole set — highlighting the shock many residents felt upon learning of the arrest.

What's next:

The investigation remains ongoing.

Bonilla-Moran will be presented to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Middle District of Florida for prosecution.
