ORLANDO, Fla. - A 25-year-old DeLand man has been arrested in connection with a weekend shooting that injured a 16-year-old boy riding home from a graduation party, authorities said.
What we know:
A 16-year-old boy was shot in the head while riding home with his family after a graduation celebration. The incident occurred when a bullet pierced the back window of their car as they drove down Woodland Avenue. According to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, the family was not the intended target of the shooting.
Authorities allege 25-year-old Travis Fowler opened fire during a dispute with others on the side of the road. The teen was struck by a stray bullet.

Travis Fowler, 25, was arrested in connection with a DeLand shooting that injured a 16-year-old bystander riding home from a graduation party.
Fowler was taken into custody Wednesday night and faces charges including attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and providing false information to law enforcement. He is being held without bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail.
What we don't know:
Authorities have not yet provided updates on the teen’s current condition or prognosis, other than Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood’s hopes for a full recovery. It's also unclear how many shots were fired, the extent of the boy’s injuries, or whether any other individuals involved in the roadside dispute have been identified or charged.
The backstory:
The shooting occurred outside 1757 N. Woodland Blvd. following an altercation between Fowler and another individual, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. It unfolded during what Sheriff Chitwood described as an argument over money. Fowler, allegedly involved in the dispute, reportedly pulled out a gun and began shooting as others fled the scene. The teen’s family was simply driving through the area when the gunfire erupted.
Fowler initially claimed he was in Orlando at the time of the shooting, but deputies say surveillance footage placed him at a gas station in DeLand just prior to the incident.

DeLand man arrested in shooting that injured 16-year-old
A 25-year-old DeLand man has been arrested in connection with a weekend shooting that injured a 16-year-old boy riding home from a graduation party, authorities said. Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood shared the latest updates in the investigation during a press conference on Thursday morning.
Detectives used video evidence from the scene and footage from a nearby gas station to track Fowler. At the station, Fowler was seen with two other individuals arguing over money. He used an EBT card during the transaction, which investigators used to confirm his identity.
Fowler, who lives in an apartment near the scene, was arrested after deputies saw him driving with a suspended license and an incorrect tag. When questioned, he initially claimed to have been in Orlando the night of the shooting, but investigators confronted him with surveillance footage placing him in DeLand.
The 16-year-old victim is continuing to recover from his injuries.
What they're saying:
The family was returning home from a graduation when the shooting occurred on Woodland Avenue. The boy’s mother called 911 and reported her son bleeding from the head.
"The back window of the car is broken... and my son’s bleeding from his head somewhere," the boy’s mother said during the 911 call.
Deputies arrested Travis Fowler following a traffic stop. Fowler appeared in court and was formally charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.
"To label him as a threat to society I feel is wrong," Travis Fowler’s mother told a judge during his bond hearing.
"In an argument over money, so just whip out the gun and just run down Woodland Avenue and just fire indiscriminately after people are running away. And this is what happens," Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. "My hopes and prayers are that he makes a full recovery."
